This presentation uses the findings from a two-year research study of collaborative play in kindergarten and privately owned early childhood settings. It will first look at the differences between boys and girls play within the framework of Maccoby's Two cultures theory and then focus on the relationship between boys dispositions and relationships and their play. A case will be made for the benefits of collaborative play for boys and a range of teaching strategies to encourage and increase the complexity of this play will be explored.
